Jewish Destinies : Citizenship, State and Community in Modern France by Pierre Birnbaum, Arthur Goldhammer (Translator) Hardcover - 288 pages (February 2000) Hill & Wang. Sorbonne {rpfessor Perre Birnbaum is the author of "Anti Semitism in France," and "The Heights of Power." This is a translation of his latest book about minority cultures and French society, a society in which 89% agree that there is widespread racism but 70% feel there are too many "arabs" in their midst. Birnbaum finds that anti-Semitism has risen and fallen in French history along with other forms of racism. He argues that Jews in France are still seen as outsiders. Click to read more. The Jews of France from Antiquity to the Present by Esther Benbassa A 1600 year history history from the Gaul period under Rome to the present. As early as the fourth century, Jews inhabited Roman Gaul, and by the reign of Charlemagne, some figured prominently at court. The perception of Jewish influence on France's rulers contributed to a clash between church and monarchy that would culminate in the mass expulsion of Jews in the fourteenth century. The book examines the re-entry of small numbers of Jews as New Christians in the Southwest and the emergence of a new French Jewish population with the country's acquisition of Alsace and Lorraine. Kofman, a prominent French philosopher, wrote this memoir of her life as a Jewish child under the German occupation in 1994, shortly before she committed suicide. This is a strangely detached recollection of what it was like to be a little girl in France during the traumatic days of the Occupation. Kofman's father, a Hasidic rabbi, was arrested on July 16, 1942, during the first large round-up of French Jews and sent to Auschwitz, where he was murdered by a kapo for refusing to work on the Sabbath. Did Italian authorities try to protect their Jews from Vichy authorities? The Third Reich's attack, mounted without consulting its Italian ally, had reverberations. Chief among them was Mussolini's decision to conduct a "parallel war" based on his own tactical and political agendas. Against this backdrop, Daniel Carpi depicts the fate of some 5000 Jews in Tunisia and as many as 30,000 in southeastern France, all of whom came under the aegis of the Italian Fascist regime early in the war.
