In the future, we hope to have a site of Jewish book readings, lectures, daf yomis, fun stuff, and more JEWISH BOOK READINGS Link to recorded bookreading at the DC JCC of Marthe Sohn, reading from "Behind Enemy Lines: The True Story of a French Jewish Spy in Nazi Germany." Marthe Cohn was a member of the French First Army intelligence service during WWII and made many covert trips inside Nazi Germany. During the presentation, she recounts her missions as a French Jewish spy and describes how she disguised herself as a young nurse searching for her fiancé in order to find information about German troop movements. After the presentation, the author answers questions from members of the audience. Marthe Cohn lives in Palo Verdes, California. In 2005, she was awarded the title of Chevalier de l'Ordre de la Légion d'Honneur. Link to recorded bookreading of "In the Name of Sorrow and Hope" by Noa Ben Artzi-Pelossof. "In the Name of Sorrow and Hope" is Noa Ben Artzi-Pelossof's memoir of her grandfather, the late Prime Minister of Israel, Yitzhak Rabin. Written when she was only 19, the book details Rabin's evolution from soldier to Middle East peacemaker. It continues through to the leader's 1995 assassination by a member of the militant Israeli right wing. Describing his life's work, Ms. Ben Artzi-Pelossof also reflects on her experiences as a young Israeli woman. The interview was conducted in 1996. Noa Ben Artzi-Pelossof is the granddaughter of the slain former Prime Minister of Israel, Yitzak Rabin. Her book "In the Name of Sorrow and Hope" was published in 1996 Link to recorded bookreading of "The Jewish Enemy: Nazi Propaganda During World War II and the Holocaust" by Jeffrey Herf. At an event at Politics and Prose in Washington, DC, author Jeffrey Herf examines the efforts to exterminate Europe's Jews during the Holocaust. Mr. Herf describes how the Nazis justified their atrocities through propaganda indicating that Germans were under seige from "the Jewish threat.". Jeffrey Herf is a professor of modern European history at the University of Maryland. He specializes in the connection between ideas and politics in Germany during the 20th century. He received his B.A. degree from the University of Wisconsin-Madison an M.A from the University of New York at Buffalo. In 1980, he received his Ph.D in sociology from Brandeis University in Waltham, MA. He has authored numerous books, including "Reactionary Modernism: Technology, Culture and Politics in Weimar and the Third Reich" (Cambridge, 1984) and "Divided Memory: The Nazi Past in the Two Germanys" (Harvard, 1997). Currently, he is working on research that will examine debates for and against communism in Weimar Germany, Nazi Germany and West Germany during the Cold War. He is also working on a collection of essays on ideals and politics in the twentieth century.
