[book] Beautiful Wasps Having Sex by Dori Carter
Hardcover - 272 pages (June 2000) William Morrow. Why do Jews enter the screen trade? Is it cuz of their parents expectations? Dori Carter's funny, first novel is about a disillusioned Jewish Hollywood ex-screenwriter looking back over her experiences. Ms Frankie Jordan (previously Francine Fiegleman, which sounds a lot like Zelda Zuckerman, the author's grandma) is approaching 40, facing a divorce, and finding it hard to finish her screenplay. Then she meets Jonathan Prince. Prince, who is Frankie's agent's secretary, is Jewish, handsome, intelligent, 24, eager to make something of himself in the movie industry, and apparently Frankie's devoted fan. Or so Frankie believes, until, after a painful betrayal, she realizes that to Jonathan she was only a small step on his way to the top. There's no particularly happy ending here, except that Frankie comes to understand herself and her fellow Hollywood Jews better as a result of her experience with Jonathan. Beneath the humor is an analysis of why Jews have always played such a major role in the movie industry. Click to read more.

[book] Sex and Shopping : The Confessions of a Nice Jewish Girl by Judith Krantz
Hardcover - 352 pages (May 2000) St Martins Press. Judith Krantz (or JUDITH Bluma-Gittel Tarcher Krantz) was about to start her eleventh novel, when she realized she was making a mistake. On the verge of launching into the imagined world of a 28-year-old, she felt an intense need to tell another story, her own story. While she seemed like another "nice Jewish girl," underneath that convenient cover she'd traveled her own, inner-directed path and had many a spicy and secret adventure. She grew up in a complicated tangle of Central Park West privilege with nannies, family problems, tormented teenaged sexuality and serious virginity, Birch Wathen, Wellesley, a year in Paris where she loses her virginity, and meets H.E. Elliot from California, the most "well-endowed" man she had ever seen. Upon her return to NYC she worked for Good Housekeeping. She has been married to her true love, Steve Krantz, for nearly 50 years. She has as much amazing fun as her fictional heroines, and here's the book to prove it. Click to read more.

[book] BLUE by Benjamin Zucker
June 2000. Putnam. Zucker, Harvard lawyer, and an expert of jewelry, and maybe jewry, crafts a novel modeled after a page of Talmud, in which the story appears in the center of the page, and "composed commentaries" by Jewish scholars, Vermeer, Modigliani, James Joyce, Franz Kafka, Claude Monet, Bobby Fischer, Chief Crazy Horse, Elie Wiesel, Bob Dylan, classical scholars, and others appear in the margins. Okay, that is the concept, but what is the story? Dosha, a young artist, seeks advice from Abraham Tal. Tal (dew) counsels you how to change your life (for $1), or to change your life back to what it was ($2). He is also a merchant of diamonds. Dosha wants to find out how to get her boyfriend, Raphael Fisher, to propose and marry. Tal has girlfriend problems of his own. Each page is followed by a page of art. Click to read more.

[book] SCAPEGOAT: The Jews, Israel, and Women's Liberation. By Andrea Dworkin
Hardcover - 448 pages (June 2000) Free Press. 80 page bibliography. This is a highly provocative book, especially when she discusses Israeli ruthlessness and Jew-on-Jew death camp rapes. Dworkin, a victim of spousal abuse and former pacifist, is an enemy of male domination. Nine years in the making, this book posits that women cannot be free of male domination and oppression without challenging and destroying their authority. Women and Jews have been society's SCAPEGOATS. Using Israel as a model, a country that gave sovereignty and strength (no weakness) to Jews, Dworkin calls on women to set up their own sovereignties. Women can no longer be pacifists, just as Jews no longer are. Click to read more.

[book] The Jewish State : The Struggle for Israel's Soul by Yoram Hazony
Hardcover - 400 pages (Spring 2000) Basic Books. An intellectual history of Israel. Hazony, a former advisor to Israeli PM Netanyahu, and the President of the NON PARTISAN Shalem Center, reports on the evils of the post-Zionists who advocate the movement towards a post-Jewish secular State of Israel, a state that is not based on the ideals of the Labor-Zionists. Will this Israel become a relic, studied by historians? Is the intellectual elite to be vilified for wanting Israel to be a normal state and not a Jewish state? Are those who want Hatikva and the Law of Return to be trashed so that non-Jewish citizens do not feel like outsiders in their own state merely shamed by their Jewishness? BUT WAIT. If you don't like his attitude, let me point out that the book provides an enlightening history of the evolution of the Zionist state. Click to read more.

It is time for you to be going / Live wherever you like, but don't live among us / It is time for you to be going / Die wherever you like, but don't die among us/ For we have work to do. Darwish says this doesn't refer to making Jews leave Israel however. Click to read more.

[bookcover] My Secret Camera: Life in the Lodz Ghetto by Mendel Grossman (Photographer), Frank Dabba Smith
Reading level: Ages 9-12
Hardcover - 40 pages (May 2000). With a camera hidden under his raincoat, Grossman secretly photographed life in the Lodz ghetto in Poland. He was a photographer for the ghetto administration, so he had access and status. He distributed some of the prints and hid the negatives in the walls of his room. He died on a forced march in Germany in 1945, but his close friend saved some of the photos, which are now in a museum exhibit in Israel. Sixteen of his stirring full-page, black-and-white photos are included here, with brief text contributed by Rabbi Frank Dabba Smith opposite each photo. ACTUALLY, YOU MAY BE BETTER OFF JUST LOOKING AT THE PICS and throwing away the text, which is fictionalized and undermines the whole process. Click to read more reviews of this book.

[book cover] Mirrors of Destruction : War, Genocide, and Modern Identity by Omer Bartov
Hardcover (June 2000) Oxford. Bartov, a Professor of History at Rutgers, discusses the relationship between total war, state organized genocide, and the emergence of modern identity. The Holocaust he argues can only be understood within the context of the Twentieth Century's predilection to apply systematic and destructive methods to resolve conflicts over identity. His analysis of the nocel, THE READER, is fascinating.
